Fly Fishing at Santa Maria Ranch

Private Fly Fishing on the South Platte River in Colorado

Santa Maria Ranch offers private access to one of the most productive stretches of the South Platte River in Colorado. This section of river is widely recognized for its exceptional trout habitat and is officially noted by Colorado Parks and Wildlife as holding more trout biomass per mile than any other river in the state. Clean water, strong flows, and a rich aquatic insect population combine to create a fishery that produces consistent action throughout the season. Fishing at the ranch is intentionally low pressure and primarily walk-and-wade, allowing anglers to slow down, read water, and fish thoughtfully. Whether you are new to fly fishing or an experienced angler looking to refine your skills, each trip is tailored to current conditions and your individual goals on the water.

Adapt to the River, Master Every Season

Exceptional Wild Trout Fishery in an Unpressured Setting

The South Platte at Santa Maria Ranch supports healthy populations of wild Brown and Rainbow Trout. Most fish range from 8 to 16 inches, with larger trout up to 22 inches caught regularly. These fish are strong, aggressive, and exceptionally well-conditioned due to the productivity of the river. During the summer months, anglers can expect steady opportunities on dry flies, nymphs, and dry-dropper rigs as trout feed actively throughout the day. As summer transitions into fall, large migratory brown trout move upstream from Spinney Mountain Reservoir, creating opportunities for truly special fish. These migratory browns often exceed 26 inches and are known for explosive takes and powerful runs. Whether you are casting to visible risers, fishing subsurface seams, or swinging streamers through deeper runs and structure, Santa Maria Ranch consistently delivers high-quality fishing in a quiet, unpressured setting.

Seasonal Techniques That Follow the Trout

Guided Expertise That Adapts to the River, Not the Other Way Around

Fishing techniques at Santa Maria Ranch vary with the season and daily conditions. Dry fly fishing can be excellent during consistent summer hatches, while nymphing remains productive throughout the season due to the river’s strong insect life. Streamer fishing becomes increasingly effective in late summer and fall, particularly when targeting larger brown trout moving through the system. Our guides focus on adapting to the river rather than forcing a single approach. Time is spent reading water, adjusting presentations, and helping anglers understand why certain techniques are effective, building skills that extend beyond the ranch.
