About Fly Fishing In Colorado On The Private Waters At Santa Maria Ranch
It was back in 1874 that Harry Epperson established the Santa Maria Ranch as a homestead where livestock and hay was produced. Today, you'll still find the main ranch house and a variety of 19th-Century structures on the property. The Ranch has been designated a National Historic District and includes a warm spring along with rare wetland plants that are hard to find throughout the world. This land is now protected by a conservation easement held by Colorado Open Lands to ensure pristine open space, habitat, water resources, and historic structures. An additional conservation easement is funded by Great Outdoors Colorado to further protect wetlands and riparian habitat on the ranch.
When you visit our Santa Maria Fly Fishing Ranch in Park County, Colorado, you'll want to pack for a day away from it all. Things like drinking water and flush toilets are found a few miles down the road in the town of Hartsel, CO. There is, however, an outhouse on the ranch that's available to anglers.
More Information About Fly Fishing At Santa Maria Ranch Private Waters
If driving from the Denver area, you're looking at about a two-hour drive. We're just over three miles north of Hartsel, CO on County Road 439, which is a gravel road. You'll find Hartsel about eighteen miles southeast of Fairplay, CO on Highway 9.
When you arrive, park your vehicle in the designated parking area before the bridge. Please, do not drive your vehicle over the bridge. We're at an elevation of 8,800 feet, and lightning is a real hazard up here. Since shelter is limited, it's a good idea to get moving if you see weather that might produce lightning. It's often best to head to your vehicle and seek a safer place to wait out the weather.
Your vehicle should be safe in the designated parking area, where theft and vandalism are exceptionally rare. However, we still strongly recommend keeping your vehicle locked while fishing and please report any trespassers or other issues to the ranch manager. Unfortunately, we're unable to allow anglers to stay on the Santa Maria Ranch overnight. So, if you're still on the property after dark, the ranch manager will come looking for you.
